Bernried am Starnberger See – Lakeside ‘Laboratory of the Imagination’
The region between Starnberg and Lake Ammer is Munich's favourite excursion destination. The lush green hilly landscape with Lake Starnberg and Lake Ammersee is criss-crossed by water and offers breathtaking views of the Alps. A cultural highlight is the Buchheim Museum of the Imagination, which Olympic architect Günter Behnisch built on the Bernried shore of Lake Starnberg. In addition to the famous Expressionist collection by "Boot" author Lothar-Günther Buchheim, curiosities from all over the world will delight visitors. Children love the mini circus, the underwater BMW, the colourful helicopter and the laboratory of the imagination for climbing and working. A top-class programme, including Hundertwasser and Nolde, attracts many visitors all year round. The romantic museum park invites you to have a picnic.

Polling artists’ village
Yesteryear today. Former monastery buildings are home to studios, exhibitions and installations by contemporary artists as well as series of concerts of the highest standard.
Bernried on Lake Starnberg
Apart from the nearby Buchheim Museum, the gold-medal winner of Germany’s ‘Most Beautiful Village’ competition boasts a lovely centre, an English-style landscaped park and a monastery complex – all right on the lake.
