Bernried am Starnberger See – Lakeside ‘Laboratory of the Imagination’

The region between Starnberg and Lake Ammer is Munich's favourite excursion destination. The lush green hilly landscape with Lake Starnberg and Lake Ammersee is criss-crossed by water and offers breathtaking views of the Alps. Rustic farming villages, magnificent villas, baroque churches, monasteries and castles characterise this unique region. 100 kilometres of lakeshore, 180 kilometres of hiking trails, 250 kilometres of cycle paths as well as lidos and lake cruises offer an Eldorado for holidaymakers. Andechs Monastery, St Mary's Minster in Dießen, Seefeld Castle, Possenhofen Castle and the Empress Elisabeth Museum are attractions for discerning connoisseurs.

A cultural highlight is the Buchheim Museum of the Imagination, which Olympic architect Günter Behnisch built on the Bernried shore of Lake Starnberg. In addition to the famous Expressionist collection by "Boot" author Lothar-Günther Buchheim, curiosities from all over the world will delight visitors. Children love the mini circus, the underwater BMW, the colourful helicopter and the laboratory of the imagination for climbing and working. A top-class programme, including Hundertwasser and Nolde, attracts many visitors all year round. The romantic museum park invites you to have a picnic.
